Table of Contents:

Health Insurance Options for Canadian Students

Canadian students studying in the US often face the question of whether to maintain their existing Canadian health insurance or purchase a separate US-based plan. This decision can significantly impact healthcare costs and coverage.

Canadian Health Insurance: While Canadian provincial health insurance plan may offer some coverage for emergency medical care in the US, it often has limitations, may not cover all necessary expenses, or may not cover anything at all.

Institution-Sponsored Insurance: Canadian students coming to the US on J1, F1, M1, or any other student visas, can buy insurance plans from their sponsored organization or institution. J1 must mandatorily meet the insurance requirements set by the US State Department before coming to the US, while F1 and M1 must meet the insurance requirements set by the institution.

International Student Health Insurance: Designed specifically for international students, these plans typically offer comprehensive coverage for medical expenses, including hospitalization, prescription drugs, and emergency medical evacuations. Premiums can vary depending on the level of coverage, age, and length of stay. You can buy these policies, meeting your visa status and insurance requirements from private insurance providers, like us, Visitor Guard®.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Plan

  • Length of Stay: If you are planning a short-term stay in the US, your Canadian health insurance might be sufficient. However, for longer stays, a US-based plan may provide more comprehensive coverage.
  • Type of Program: The nature of your study program can influence your insurance needs. For example, if you are participating in a work-study program, you might need additional coverage.
  • Pre-existing Conditions: If you have pre-existing medical conditions, it is essential to check the coverage provided by both your Canadian and US-based insurance plans.
  • Cost and Coverage: Compare the premiums, deductibles, copays, and overall coverage offered by both options to determine the best value for your needs.
